Will Moving to the Suburbs Be Boring?

Buyer Tips, Leesburg, VA, Purcellville, VA

The short answer

No. Moving to the suburbs isn’t boring unless you plan it that way. In western Loudoun, you’ll find historic Main Streets, monthly street parties, wineries and breweries on every backroad, and more festivals than you have weekends. What changes is the pace, not the amount there is to do.

This is one of the two questions I hear most from clients moving out of DC and Arlington (the other is the commute). It’s a fair worry. If your idea of the suburbs is a cul-de-sac, a chain restaurant, and a lawn you’re not allowed to enjoy, I understand the hesitation. That’s not what living out here looks like.

What there is to do, town by town

Leesburg. On the first Friday of every month, downtown roads close and businesses open their doors with live music, tastings, and specials. Add three parades a year, wine flights at The Wine Kitchen, and events at Ida Lee and Morven Park, and your calendar fills up fast. Read my full Leesburg guide for more.

Purcellville. The W&OD Trail ends at the old train station downtown, so Saturday can start with a bike ride and end with Neapolitan pizza at Knead Wine. Summer brings Cannons baseball at Fireman’s Field and the Purcellville Food & Wine Festival. Read my full Purcellville guide for more.

Lovettsville. A town that throws an Oktoberfest and a Hot Cocoa Crawl is not a boring town. On a regular Saturday, you can get lunch at Flying Ace Farm with Monk’s BBQ, visit the Highland cows at Stockyard Brewery, and pick up goat cheese at George’s Mill Farm on the way home.

Hamilton and Waterford. These are the quiet ones, and that’s the point. Even so, the Waterford Fair is the standout event of the year, and the Hamilton Mercantile is the real-life Rose’s Apothecary, with more stuff.

That’s before the wineries, breweries, farm stands, and hiking trails between all of them.

What changes when you move west

I’ll be honest: some things do change. You’ll drive more. You’ll have fewer options for an 11 p.m. dinner. And the best events aren’t on a billboard. You hear about them from your neighbors.

But that last part is the good news. Out here, community isn’t something you find in an app. It’s the barista who knows your order, the farm stand that saves you the last dozen eggs, and the neighbor who shows up when you need a hand.

I know this one from experience. When my husband and I moved to Lovettsville, the decision was about the property. We wanted land. What I didn’t expect was how much the town would win me over. I can get groceries, go to the gym, grab coffee, and go out to dinner without the 15-minute drive into Leesburg or Purcellville. And we have a lot of land to keep up with (hence the name of this blog), so it means something that our neighbors on all three sides have offered to help whenever we need it.

It’s not isolated. It’s plenty of space to breathe. Moving west isn’t giving something up. It’s a different way of living.

Quick FAQ

Is Loudoun County boring? Not at all. Western Loudoun has monthly First Fridays in Leesburg, Oktoberfest in Lovettsville, the Purcellville Food & Wine Festival, and dozens of wineries and breweries between them.

What is there to do in western Loudoun on the weekend? Bike the W&OD Trail, browse Main Street shops, visit a farm brewery or winery, and catch a festival or parade. Most weekends, you’ll have to choose.

Is moving from DC to the suburbs worth it? It depends on what you want more of. If you want space, a yard, and a tight-knit community, and you can live with a longer drive, it’s worth a serious look.
