The short answer
No, but it depends on what “everything” means to you. Western Loudoun is 15 to 35 minutes from Dulles, under an hour from Reston and Tysons, and about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes from DC by car. Groceries, coffee, and dinner are a few minutes from home in every town. The only thing that’s far is a five-day-a-week drive into the city, and even that has a workaround.
This is the other big question I get from clients leaving DC and Arlington (the first is whether the suburbs will be boring). Here’s how the drive breaks down from the three western towns I know best:

What’s closer than you think
Everyday errands. Leesburg, Purcellville, and Lovettsville each have groceries, coffee, a gym, and restaurants in town. Most weeks, you won’t need to leave western Loudoun at all.
The airport. Dulles is closer to Leesburg than it is to most of DC. If you travel for work, you may end up with a shorter ride to your gate than you had in the city.
Medical care. Inova Loudoun Hospital sits in Lansdowne, just east of Leesburg, and each town has doctors’ offices and urgent care nearby.
The weekend. Here’s my favorite reframe. City folks drive an hour on Saturday to get to wineries, farm breweries, orchards, and hiking trails. Out here, you live next to them. So the question isn’t just “how far is the city?” It’s also “how far is the stuff you love doing on your days off?”
Ways around the drive
If you’ll commute into DC, you have more options than Route 7 and patience.
- Work hybrid. If you go into the office two or three days a week, an hour’s drive feels a lot different than it does five days a week.
- Take the MARC. From Lovettsville, the Brunswick MARC station in Maryland is about four miles away, with weekday trains to Union Station.
- Ride the Silver Line. From Leesburg, you can drive to the Ashburn Metro station and take the train in.
- Pay for speed. The Dulles Greenway is the quickest drive east from Leesburg, and the tolls add up, so budget for them like a utility bill.
- Learn the backroads. Every local has a few. I’ll share mine once you’re under contract.
My advice: before you buy, drive your actual commute at rush hour, on a weekday, from the house you’re considering. It’s the best 75 minutes you’ll spend in the whole process.
